In this exclusive interview with The Leaders 360, Catherine Uhlinger shares how her experience working with franchise brands, prospective owners, franchise consultants, and multi-unit operators shaped her approach to franchise development. She reflects on the gaps she observed in the traditional process, particularly around candidate education, brand visibility, and creating meaningful connections between franchisors and prospective owners.
Catherine also discusses how Right Franchise Right Time has evolved into a broader franchise education, intelligence, training, and growth ecosystem, bringing together opportunity discovery, professional education, technology, expansion support, and direct connections. She explains the importance of responsible broker and consultant training, the role of technology in franchise development, and her vision for creating better-informed connections between the right brands, professionals, and candidates at the right time.
A Career Built in Franchise Development
We were interested in learning more about Catherine Uhlinger’s professional background, so we asked her to share her journey in franchise development and what inspired her to build Right Franchise Right Time.
Catherine Uhlinger: I’m Catherine Uhlinger, founder of Right Franchise Right Time. My career in franchise development has allowed me to work with emerging concepts, established national brands, multi-unit operators, franchise consultants, and people exploring business ownership for the first time.
Working on both the franchisor and candidate sides gave me a clear view of where the industry works well—and where it often becomes unnecessarily complicated. I saw promising brands struggle to gain visibility, qualified candidates become overwhelmed by competing messages, and franchise development teams spend significant money without always creating meaningful connections.
Right Franchise Right Time grew from a simple belief: franchise growth should be based on education, transparency, timing, and fit. Brands need better ways to tell their stories, and prospective owners need a clearer path for evaluating opportunities before making a major commitment.
What began as an idea for improving the connection between brands and candidates has evolved into a broader franchise development ecosystem designed to support responsible, sustainable growth.
The Gaps Catherine Saw in the Industry
We wanted to understand the challenges Catherine observed within the traditional franchise development process, so we asked what gaps she identified while working with brands and prospective owners.
Catherine Uhlinger: One of the largest gaps was the disconnect between generating leads and creating qualified candidates. A name and email address may be called a lead, but that does not mean the person understands franchising, is financially prepared, or is aligned with the brand.
I also saw too much emphasis placed on lead volume rather than candidate education and process quality. Brands often pay substantial fees for exposure or referrals, yet still struggle to communicate their full value proposition. At the same time, prospective owners may receive multiple calls before they have enough information to decide whether an opportunity is worth exploring.
Another gap was the lack of education surrounding master franchise, regional development, resale, and multi-unit opportunities. These models require a different level of experience, capital, infrastructure, and long-term planning than a single-unit franchise.
The franchise development process works best when expectations are clear from the beginning. Candidates should understand the investment, responsibilities, support system, development timeline, and risks. Franchisors should also have a structured process for determining whether a candidate is truly the right fit.
Building the Right Franchise Right Time Ecosystem
We were curious to learn how Right Franchise Right Time has evolved, so we asked Catherine how she has developed it into a broader franchise development ecosystem beyond a traditional franchise directory.
Catherine Uhlinger: We never wanted to build a website that only displayed franchise listings. Visibility matters, but visibility without education, intelligence, professional development, and follow-through is not enough.
Right Franchise Right Time has evolved into a connected franchise education, intelligence, training, and growth ecosystem. Each platform serves a different purpose while supporting the same larger journey.
AboutFranchising.org helps aspiring owners understand franchising in clear, practical language before making a major decision.
Empire Builders Network, or EBN, helps prospective owners explore franchise opportunities, connect with brands, and better understand which ownership paths may align with their goals.
FranIntel.ai brings technology, systems, research, and intelligence into the franchise development process to support better-informed decisions and more efficient growth.
Open Your Location, or OYL, supports location-based expansion and connects entrepreneurs, brands, and service providers with resources that can help them open and grow successfully.
Our franchise consultant and broker training program, supported through Franchise Consultant Certification, provides structured education and professional certification for franchise consultants and brokers. The program covers the franchise discovery
process, candidate qualification, FDD fundamentals, financial readiness, validation, ethics, franchise models, and responsible candidate guidance.
Together, these platforms and programs create much more than a directory. They support education, professional training, opportunity discovery, evaluation, technology, expansion, and long-term business growth.
The goal is not simply to place more brands in front of more people. It is to create better-informed connections between the right brands, the right professionals, and the right candidates at the right time.

Raising the Standard for Broker and Consultant Training
We wanted to explore Catherine’s perspective on professional education in franchising, so we asked why she believes broker and consultant training is essential to the industry.
Catherine Uhlinger: Franchise consultants can have a major influence on someone’s financial future. That responsibility requires more than knowing how to present a list of brands.
This commitment led us to create Franchise Consultant Certification, a structured training and certification platform for franchise consultants and brokers. The program helps professionals build the knowledge, confidence, and ethical foundation needed to guide prospective owners through an informed franchise evaluation process.
A well-trained consultant should understand the Franchise Disclosure Document, financial qualification, territory availability, validation, franchise economics, candidate suitability, and the differences between single-unit, multi-unit, area development, and master franchise opportunities.
Consultants should also know how to ask thoughtful questions and recognize when franchising may not be the right choice for a particular person. The goal should never be to push someone toward a transaction. It should be to help that person make an informed decision.
Professional education also improves outcomes for franchisors. Better-trained consultants can submit candidates who understand the process, meet the basic qualifications, and have a genuine reason for exploring the brand.
Training creates stronger consultants, more prepared candidates, and better franchise relationships. Ultimately, it protects the credibility of the entire industry.
Helping Franchisors Gain Visibility and Build Trust
We were interested in understanding how Right Franchise Right Time supports franchisors, so we asked Catherine how the ecosystem helps brands build visibility, credibility, and meaningful connections with qualified candidates.
Catherine Uhlinger: Our ecosystem helps franchisors increase visibility and credibility through AboutFranchising.org, Empire Builders Network, FranIntel.ai, Open Your Location, educational content, professional resources, technology-supported systems, and direct connection opportunities.
Our approach combines franchise listings with educational articles, brand spotlights, interviews, category comparisons, digital magazine features, and direct-access opportunities. This gives franchisors several ways to communicate their value and establish credibility before the first conversation occurs.
We also believe brands should have greater control over their messaging and their relationships with candidates. Our platforms are being designed to encourage direct connections while reducing unnecessary barriers between the interested candidate and the franchise development team.
Qualification is equally important. Through educational content and structured processes, we want prospective owners to better understand financial requirements, the franchise award process, the FDD, validation, and the responsibilities of ownership before they move forward.
Better information does not eliminate the need for personal conversations. It makes those conversations more productive.
The Role of Technology in Franchise Growth
We wanted to learn more about the role of technology in franchise development, so we asked Catherine how emerging technologies can improve the experience and outcomes for both brands and entrepreneurs.
Catherine Uhlinger: Technology can make franchise development faster, more organized, and more personalized, but it should support human relationships rather than replace them.
Used responsibly, technology can help franchisors manage candidate communication, identify follow-up needs, organize territory information, deliver educational materials, and track each candidate’s progress. It can also help development teams respond more consistently so interested candidates are not lost because an email was overlooked or a follow-up was delayed.
For entrepreneurs, technology can provide better access to information before they speak with a salesperson. They can research brands, compare business models, understand investment requirements, learn how the franchise process works, and prepare stronger questions.
Artificial intelligence also has the potential to improve candidate education, content creation, communication, and operational efficiency. However, the information must remain accurate, transparent, and properly reviewed.
Franchising is still a relationship-driven industry. Technology should remove friction and improve communication, while important decisions continue to be guided by experienced people, thoughtful conversations, and careful due diligence.
Supporting Emerging and International Brands
We were curious to explore Catherine’s approach to franchise expansion, so we asked how Right Franchise Right Time supports master franchise, regional development, and international growth opportunities.
Catherine Uhlinger: Master franchise and international expansion require much more than finding an investor with sufficient capital. A master franchise partner may be responsible for developing an entire market, adapting the concept locally, recruiting unit franchisees, establishing operational infrastructure, and protecting the brand over many years.
Our goal is to help educate both sides of that relationship. Brands need to understand whether their concept, systems, support team, documentation, supply chain, and economics are truly ready for international growth. Prospective master partners need to understand the scale of the commitment and the capabilities required to develop a territory successfully.
Through Right Franchise Right Time and its connected platforms, we support education and visibility for master franchise, regional development, multi-unit, and international expansion opportunities.
We also want to connect brands with the professional resources needed for successful market entry, including legal guidance, franchise development strategy, localization, training, marketing, technology, and recruitment.
International expansion should not be treated as selling a large territory and hoping it develops. It requires planning, infrastructure, mutual accountability, and a partner who can responsibly represent the brand in a new market.
Catherine’s Vision for Responsible Franchise Expansion
We wanted to understand Catherine Uhlinger’s long-term vision for the franchise industry, so we asked how she hopes to build a more responsible, transparent, and sustainable franchise development ecosystem.
Catherine Uhlinger: My long-term vision is an ecosystem in which franchisors, consultants, candidates, vendors, and development partners have access to better information and operate with greater transparency.
For franchisors, responsible growth means awarding franchises to owners who are financially, professionally, and culturally prepared to represent the brand. Growth should not be measured only by the number of agreements signed. It should also be measured by franchisee performance, retention, satisfaction, and the strength of the overall system.
For candidates, transparency means understanding the investment, risks, responsibilities, economics, and support structure before making a commitment. No business is risk-free, and responsible franchise development should never suggest otherwise.
For consultants, it means prioritizing suitability and long-term success over the immediate transaction. For vendors and service providers, it means delivering what was promised and helping brands build the infrastructure required to support growth.
I believe the future of franchise development will be more connected, educational, and technology-enabled. The organizations that succeed will be those that combine innovation with integrity and understand that sustainable growth begins with choosing the right people.
Advice for Franchise Leaders and Future Business Owners
We were interested in learning what advice Catherine would share with those working toward sustainable success, so we asked what message she would like to offer franchisors, consultants, and aspiring business owners.
Catherine Uhlinger: Do not confuse speed with progress.
For franchisors, sustainable growth begins with a strong foundation. Make sure your systems, economics, support team, culture, and franchisee profile are clear before accelerating development. The right franchisee can strengthen a brand for years, while the wrong fit can create lasting challenges.
For consultants, remember that every recommendation may influence someone’s savings, family, career, and future. Ask better questions, continue learning, and never be afraid to tell someone that an opportunity may not be right for them.
For aspiring business owners, take the time to understand yourself before selecting a brand. Consider your financial goals, lifestyle, strengths, weaknesses, preferred level of involvement, and tolerance for risk. Review the FDD carefully, speak with franchisees, evaluate the leadership team, and seek qualified legal and financial guidance.
Success in franchising is rarely created by one exciting presentation or one fast decision. It is built through preparation, honest conversations, disciplined execution, and strong relationships.
The right opportunity matters—but so do the right expectations, the right support, and the right timing.
