Warner Bros.’ Superman reboot has launched with a strong debut, earning $22.5 million in Thursday night previews. This sets a new record for the highest preview earnings of any Superman film and ranks as the third-biggest Thursday opening in DC movie history.
Directed by James Gunn and produced by Peter Safran, the film is the first theatrical project released under their leadership at DC Studios. Starring David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, the movie is expected to bring in between $130 million and $140 million over its first three days.
That forecast places it on par with The Batman (2022), which opened at $134 million, and close to Batman v. Superman and The Dark Knight Rises, which launched with $166 million and $160 million, respectively.
Experts say the film’s box office showing will serve as a major test for audience interest in Gunn and Safran’s 10-year plan for the DC Universe. So far, early reviews are largely favorable, with the movie earning an 83% “Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film is also playing on premium screens, which are expected to help boost revenue throughout the weekend. Analysts note that family attendance could give Superman extended momentum at the box office during the summer.
This release marks a new beginning for DC Films following several years of mixed reactions from fans. As Gunn and Safran work to rebuild DC’s presence in theaters, Superman’s success may help shape the direction of the franchise moving forward.
