Dr. Isabella Mae Niznik is a payroll and tax leader with more than 39 years of experience in payroll operations, multi-state taxation, regulatory compliance, human resources, and payroll technology. She currently serves as the U.S. Payroll and Tax Manager at Rise, where she helps strengthen payroll tax operations, compliance controls, system implementations, client onboarding, and reporting processes.
The values of perseverance, personal responsibility, and hard work shaped Dr. Niznik’s early life and became the foundation of both her personal and professional journey. Throughout her career, she has believed that success is rarely the result of a single defining moment. Instead, it is built through consistency, resilience, continuous learning, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when the path is difficult.
She began her career working directly with payroll processes and gradually developed specialized expertise in payroll taxation and compliance. Dr. Niznik has worked extensively with platforms such as ADP Workforce Now, ADP SmartCompliance, ADP MasterTax, UKG Ready, UKG Pro, PeopleSoft, Payworks, and Canada Pay Plus.
While balancing a career and raising a family, she continued her education. In 1998, she made the decision to pursue postgraduate studies, and in 2004 she earned her Ph.D. in Business Administration. Beyond payroll, Dr. Niznik is also a published author and the founder of IMN Storyworks LLC.
For Dr. Niznik, payroll has always been more than a process; it is a responsibility that directly impacts people’s lives, financial security, and wellbeing. Throughout her career, Dr. Niznik also recognized that payroll professionals serve as an essential bridge between Human Resources, Finance, Operations, Legal, technology teams, vendors, and employees.
One of the most significant was developing deep expertise in multi-state payroll taxation. Another pivotal milestone was earning her Ph.D. in Business Administration. A particularly meaningful achievement came when she was recognized as a Global Payroll Titan Award finalist for two consecutive years.
However, Dr. Niznik considers her greatest achievement to be the impact she has had on the growth and development of others. Whether through mentoring, training, or sharing knowledge, she finds immense value in helping professionals build confidence, understand complex compliance requirements, and advance in their own careers.
Dr. Niznik also emphasizes that payroll technology alone does not guarantee compliance. While technology plays an essential role, it cannot replace experienced payroll professionals, accurate system configuration, complete data, documented controls, and thorough reconciliation processes.
Throughout her career, Dr. Niznik has learned that effective leadership begins with listening. She has also learned that accountability and compassion can coexist. Ultimately, Dr. Niznik believes leadership is not defined by a title. Rather, it is demonstrated through integrity, consistency, service, and a willingness to take responsibility.
Above all, she reminds professionals that payroll is ultimately about people. Every payroll calculation affects someone’s livelihood, making accuracy, integrity, compliance, and service fundamental responsibilities.
